Webster's Dictionary says the definition of accountability is: "the obligation or willingness to accept responsibility for one's actions. Accountable means obligated to explain, justify, and take responsibility for one's actions, and to answer to someone, such as a person with more authority. The state of being accountable is accountability. The word accountable is often used in the context of individuals taking responsibility for their actions (www.dictionary.com). Some common synonyms of accountable are amenable, answerable, liable, and responsible. While all these words mean "subject to being held to account," accountable suggests imminence of retribution for unfulfilled trust or violated obligation (www.merriam-webster.com). A simple question to you as a mentor is that, are you accountable? Do you have an accountability partner? Some will say, I am accountable to God and not to anyone. I know myself. This is just a subtle way of hiding at back of one finger. The devil loves it when your life is not under check; we must not misunderstand the concept of accountability. No great conglomerate, systems and even in the church that you will not find accountability as their bedrock. You will hold your mentee accountable for their words, actions, and plans. The mentee needs to take ownership of their obligations to report the progress on their journey.
