Learning Outcomes

Discover your origins: Creating a family tree involves digging through your family roots, discovering yourself, and bringing to life your family’s history by exploring the lives of those that came before you. ‘‘Remember and Claim all of who you are’’ - Moses Sowale. Doing this gives you a connection to your heritage.

Create your family tree: Your family tree is a type of diagram representing generations of families and how they are connected throughout the years. Family trees can be simple and may just include your nuclear family members, or they can go back many generations to enable you to see and understand where you came from. Your family tree can include names, marriage dates, birth dates, and pictures.

Explore your Family history: Ask family members for clues, pictures, and documents that can verify your ancestry, and write them down. Have you ever wondered about the oldest family tree? It belongs to Confucius, the famous Chinese teacher and philosopher who lived 551–479 BC. The family tree covers 43,000 pages in 80 volumes. The family genealogy has been maintained for some 2,000 years and has 2 million known registered descendants, with an estimated 3 million in all. How fascinating!
