About the course

Law refers to requirements, rules, commandments, and Justice. God's Law is the "what," and God's Grace is the "how." God's Law exposes sin; God's Grace forgives sin. Jesus stated that he had not come to abolish the Law but to fulfill it. Moses gave the Law for a while, but Jesus Christ brought Grace and Truth. Understanding the distinctions between these two covenants is critical for living the Christian life as God intended. Some people believe that we should live by only Law, while others say that we should live only under Grace, which should not be so. The Law of God alone indicates man's problem, while the Grace of God provides God's remedy.

God's Law states that He desires holiness to characterize our lives, while God's Grace can only provide such godliness in our lives. God's Law teaches us that Christlike love should pervade our attitudes and relationships, but only God's Grace can bring such love to us. God's Law says He wants the Father's perfections to grow in us, but only God's Grace is sufficient to carry out such a transformational process.

Learning Outcomes

Discover God's purpose for the Law

The Law of God serves a purpose; it is a mirror that reflects our sins and our need for the Savior, Jesus Christ. It acts as a check on our sinful nature, which would otherwise lead us to sin. It serves as a guide to living a holy, God-pleasing life.

Understand the role of Grace

Grace is created by God and given as assistance because God desires one to have it, not necessarily because of anything one has done to earn it. It is a spontaneous gift from God to people that is generous, free, and completely unexpected and unnecessary. It takes the form of divine favor, love, compassion, and a share in God's divine life.

Recognize the importance of Law and Grace

We are still obligated to obey God's commands as Christ-followers, but now we have the Holy Spirit in us, giving us the ability, desire, and power to do so. "For it is God who works in you, to will and to work for His good pleasure."
